This recipe just as good using Pictsweet frozen spinach or collard greens instead of turnip greens.

Ingredients

Serves 10

  • 3 cups Pictsweet frozen Blackeye Peas
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 1/2 cups Pictsweet Seasoning Blend
  • 1/2 cup cooked and chopped ham (preferably country ham)
  • 4 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 1/2 cups Pictsweet frozen Chopped Turnip Greens
  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans undrained diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon Creole seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt to taste

Directions

Place frozen Blackeye Peas in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes or until peas are tender. Drain. In a skillet over medium heat, saute seasoning blend in vegetable oil. Add ham and garlic and continue to sauté, stirring for 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer ham and vegetables to slow cooker. Add chicken broth, blackeye peas, turnip greens, tomatoes, Creole seasoning, pepper and oregano. Cook for approximately 5 hours on low setting.
